Collier County has 10 fire districts. The cities of Marco Island and Naples do not participate on the Steering Committee. Collier County runs EMS and Isles of Capri and Ochopee fire districts. Big Corkscrew, East Naples, Golden Gate, Immokalee and North Naples are independent special districts with fire commissioners who set policies for each district.
The Steering Comittee began in 1991 as an effort to bring all the independent fire districts together. The founders included elected officials and chiefs from the independent fire districts and Marco Island.
The Collier County Fire Code Officials Office is, perhaps, one of more important creations of the committee. Several functional consolidiations of services were also accomplished, along with several agreements between participating agencies.
The Steering Committee recognizes that all fire districts have unique characteristics and that one centralized fire department in such a large county may not be practical because of these characteristics.
